Your questions, answered

What to know
before you book

Balayage is one of the most requested color services in Atlanta, and one of the most misunderstood. The technique is highly customizable and depends on your hair's structural condition and color history. Below are the questions we hear most before a first appointment, answered directly so you know what to expect.

What is balayage, and how is it different from traditional highlights?

With traditional highlights, a colorist takes sections of hair, applies color from the root all the way to the ends, and wraps everything in foil. The result is bright and uniform, but it creates a visible root line that needs regular touch-ups as hair grows in. Balayage works differently. Color is painted onto the hair by hand, staying light near the roots and building toward the ends. The natural hair at the root stays untouched, which gives balayage that soft, sun-kissed look. As your hair grows in, the color grows with it rather than against it.

Who is a good candidate for balayage?

Balayage is a good fit for most hair types and textures, but the condition your hair is currently in matters. If your hair is healthy and hasn't been through a lot of chemical processing recently, you're likely a good candidate. If you've had a perm, relaxer, or significant color work done recently, or if your hair is feeling fragile or over-processed, your stylist may recommend waiting or doing some repair work first. If you've been using box dye at home, especially the kind that progressively darkens hair, let your stylist know before your appointment. Some of those formulas don't mix well with professional lighteners and need to be grown out completely before any lightening service. Your balayage service will begin with an assessment of your hair by our stylists, and from there we'll put together a plan that works for you.

How long does balayage last, and how often will I need to come back?

Balayage is much more forgiving when it comes to upkeep than traditional highlights. Because your natural root color stays part of the look, there's no obvious line forming as your hair grows in. Most clients find they can go 3 to 6 months between full appointments. In between, a gloss or toning service is usually enough to keep the color fresh and neutralize any warmth that starts to come through. Some clients like to add face-framing touch-ups between full appointments as well, which keeps the brightness up front without doing a full service. At your consultation, your stylist will give you a clear sense of what upkeep looks like based on your starting color, how much lift you're going for, and how often you wash your hair.

What is the difference between balayage and ombré?

Both balayage and ombré create a gradient from darker roots to lighter ends, but they look quite different in person. Ombré creates a distinct horizontal transition where the entire lower half of the hair shifts to a lighter color. It's a bolder, more dramatic look with a clear line separating the two tones. Balayage is more subtle. Instead of one horizontal shift, color is painted in vertical ribbons throughout the hair so lighter pieces are woven naturally into the darker base. This gives the result more dimension and movement, and makes the grow-out less noticeable than ombré. If you're looking for something softer and more natural, balayage is the stronger choice.

How do I care for my hair after balayage?

After your service, a few simple changes to your routine will go a long way toward keeping your color looking its best. The biggest one is switching to a sulfate-free shampoo. Regular shampoos can strip your toner faster than you'd expect, and that's what brings on brassiness. A violet or blue toning shampoo used once or twice a week is a great addition to keep warmth at bay between visits. Always use a heat protectant before styling to protect both your hair and your color. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, a UV-protective leave-in spray is worth adding to your routine, since sun exposure is one of the main reasons color fades. Keep up with deep conditioning or bond-building treatments regularly and your color will stay vibrant much longer.
